2017 SEASON 2 IDEAS ???

14.03.2017   Category: Site news

We are still more than 3 months away from Season 2, but it's time to start discussing race formats and schedules for Season 2 based on the experiences so far with Season 1. Participation in some of the classes is down which calls for some serious re-thinking of the whole event structure.

CLASSES
I am thinking of some radical changes to create more focus on events and certain classes.

CLASSES
One of the problems we are facing is class dilution. We offer so many classes now that participation is spread thin over all these classes, resulting in fewer and fewer participants per event. Just like what has happened in real r/c over the past 20-30 years. Of course we must try to get participation up by getting new members into VRC and get them racing. But we could also look at reducing the number of classes we are racing each season.

For example:
Season 1: nitro buggies - sc truck - 1:10 nitro sedans - 1:12 electric sportscars
Season 2: electric buggies - rally X - 1:8 nitro sportscars - 1:10 electric touringcars

Another options could be to race just 1 on-road and 1 off-road event per week. That would mean fewer events per class, but more focus on each of the classes.

FORMAT
For Season 1 we have opted for 3 rounds of racing, we have seen quite a few comments that suggest that we should go back to the simple 2-round format, qualifying and final. Is this a general feeling? Should we vary more in the race format?

MULTI-PLAYER TRACKS
We have the option to turn tracks on and off for multi-player, we have never used this before, but it could be an interesting option to consider. We could turn all tracks which have an official event going in a certain period, on for the same period, and all other tracks, with exception of the free 'public' tracks, off. This would create focus of the whole community on just these tracks which may result in more multi-player activity. It is like 'we are all going to this big event on that particular track and do all our racing there togehter'. A week later we all move to the next track...

Let me have your thoughts on these issues, maybe it can result in more participation in the future.

I'm testing interesting race format on club races.

The better (for me) for series up to now?
I think it's a mix of what different people have suggested.

2 rounds

Round 1: qualifying RACE (Berman's tip)
Shorter time (5-7), more tries (6-10)
4-5 days

Round 2: final RACE
Longer time (7-20), less tries (2-3)
3-4 days

I'd like to see also longer finals for 1:10 ISTC (7 minutes?) and shorter qualifying for 1:12 (5 minutes?)

And please, create an "official" VRC Pro Discord server for voice and text chat.

It's free.

Nothing can convince me to run off-road and/or electric cars. Of course only 1/8 scale!!

Thanks Pieter,

Like Warren said, you could always run Eight different tracks if that is more appealing to the community. I just thought it might be a good way to mix racers to run off road cars, on road.

Either way a "mixed class series" would bring the entire VRC community together.

Also another "Eight" variation -
- Eight racers per final (i.e. A-main, B-Main etc... only have 8 racers instead of usual 10)

interesting idea, would of course not work for off-road tracks....

Love your idea Kevin!
But it would have to be 8 tracks or it would get too boring...
I'm not against running offroad cars on onroad tracks occasionally though, especially at reduced grip for good drifting... would help make it extra "loco" ... :)

I honestly think "Sport" is fair for drivers that hold "Pro" in other classes.

Posted by: Nuno Correia (PT) on 26.3.2017 19:41:38 (UTC) using me as exemple im fast in 1/8 on-road and i suck on 1/8 off-road

You currently hold "Pro" level at 1/8 Nitro buggy Spec, that's not my definition of "suck". I think it's more fit that you compete in at least "Sport"; regardless of class.

Take the latest News item "Event report for: 2017 SEASON 1 1:8 ELECTRIC BUGGIES ROUND 3" as example. In "Club", #2 Mark Thompson holds "Sport"-level in all six classes he's rated in, so he's a little in the wrong class. That's al right as he might not be sure where he stands, or in fact ranked as "Sport" during the finals. #1 Nicolas Hallier and #3 Mario Unverzagt are both "Pro" in Nitro Buggy however and it seems strange they enjoy being big fishes in a small pond. They are better suited in "Sport" IMHO.

Personally it's all the same to me as I'm having fun and doing my best as is (I actually check my ranking in "All" to see how I'm improving), but if VRC now has these three different skill levels it should also be implemented to allow less skilled drivers spots at the podium.
28.03.2017 [04:44]
I assume you have two or three classes that consistently fill up - run those every time and rotate the others. I'm running 5 classes right now and those are only VRC or Steam races. I never even get around to racing the club races that I should be participating in.
26.03.2017 [20:41]
First of all is good to remmenber that there will never be 1 solution that will make everyone happy, so we should go with the one that makes more people happy.

Even if i do agree with you in part so we can protect and give extra motivation to newbs, using me as exemple im fast in 1/8 on-road and i suck on 1/8 off-road and other classes even worst were i finnish in like 30-40 place(or worst).
Pro class is just 1 name, doesnt mean we are all pros(i wish it was lol).
So if im like 35º in club and because im pro in 1/8 on road "you" make me race in the next level, it also wont be fair...rigth?

As for the finals to everyone...for me was a very big mistakes only make final A, if im a big defender of finals to everyone in real life(when possible by number of entries time),of course that to me its absolutely nonsense only to make final A in VRC, as the goal in both is to have as many people racing as possible why should we say to people that want to drive "nop you were not fast enough to keep driving and have fun in this race".

Posted by: Tobbe Arnesson (SE) on 21.3.2017 6:48:27 (UTC) Andrea has a good suggestion here: http://www.vrcworld.com/forums/posts.aspx?topic=186727 If a member reaches "pro"-level in any class, they automatically move to at least "sport" in all other classes. There are a lot of "pro"-racers in the "club"-events today. If more racers is the goal, it might be beneficial to let us newbs compete against each other. I also like the ideas that everyone gets to race in a final, even if it's in 'Z'. I'm here to learn and the only way is to put in the time.
