I use the same radio that I race outdoors and indoor with my 1/ 24th, 1/10th and 1/8th scale racers. Mostly offroad buggies. I really like the adjustability of the Futaba 3PKS, an older high end radio. Any good make with similar adjustments will do the same job, this is not brand sensitive, just my personal choice.
For Instance:
- If you find you are stuffing yourself just after a tight high speed corner, then you can change the throttle ATL so you have more drag brake to slow the vehicle down automatically. Being aware that too much drag brake will overheat your motor.
- When using vehicles allowing changed gear ratios, you can try different spur/pinion gear options until the car feels right to you, then you can adjust your throttle end point up or down by percentage points until you can pull full throttle most of the time and still drive under full control. You will be a lot faster if you do not hit walls.
- When changing scales, you need to use your dual rate steering control so it is not too twitchy. Usually the dual rate is around 60% for 12th scale and up to 100% for 10th and 8th scale vehicles. A good rule is to turn down the dual rate until you can just make the tightest corner then dial in a smidge more.
Using the radio to help dial in a vehicle is a whole lot easier than fighting a car that accelerates too fast or does not turn in as you wish. Taking advantage of what the radio has to offer lets me concentrate on driving.
