How to play external music from another HDD or directory added: 13.04.2013

I have seen some people complain about the external music feature requires you to copy your MP3 files to the installation directory. Many of us have large collections of music and have no interest in copy those files to our system drive or the drive where VRC is installed. Well, there is in fact a very simple solution to this. Just create a symbolic directory link to the directory where your MP3 files are (can be on another drive as well)!

Here is how to do it:

1. Open the cmd window with administrator rights. Hit Windows key, type "cmd", right click the cmd.exe icon and choose "Run as administrator.

2. Go to the Virtual RC Pro installation directory (the path is probably "C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtual RC Pro").

3. Make sure that you do not already have a directory called "Music" in there. If you do then rename it or delete it, your choice.

4. Now it's time to create a directory link to the folder where your MP3 files are. This is done with the "mklink" command. In my case I have created a new folder on another drive where I have put some MP3 files I want to be available from VRC (D:\Media\Music\VRC Pro Music). I now type the following command and hit Enter:

mklink /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\Virtual RC Pro\Music" "D:\Media\Music\VRC Pro Music"

5. If you now run the "dir" command you should see something like this:

2013-04-12 20:40 <SYMLINKD> Music [D:\Media\Music\VRC Pro Music]

6. If you run "dir Music" you should get a list of your MP3 files.

Great! Now you have VRC external music playing from another drive or directory :-)

Please note, if you installed VRC Pro in "C:\Program Files (x86)" it does not work to create the link by the mouse right clicking "copy and paste shortcut" method, you have to do it as described above.
