I found that switching the shadows off completely increased the frames rates significantly. Previously I had to reduce all graphics options to the minimum to get fair frame rates, but even then with some areas with shadows caused some stuttering.

With the shadows off I could increase the other quality settings and still have more than 80 frames per second.
