CORNER CUTTING ISSUE AND FIXES EXPLAINED

I was recently notified about deliberate corner cutting issues at Heemstede and Fiorano. Pls. understand that it is impossible for me to check every possible corner cutting cheat before release. Even in beta testing such corner cutting instances are not reported. Let me explain the process to fix a corner cutting or a false turn marshal issue.

To fix such issues I need to edit the 'segment' map which is very low resoltion, 400x300 pix or so. As the name indicates, this map is used to devide the track in sections using 8-bit colors. The car must pass these sections in a fixed sequence. This sequence is defined by the order of the 8 bit colors. If a car skips one of the segments (colors) it results in a turn marshal warning. By the way, besides corner cutting issues there can also be 'false' turn marshal warnings which require the same procedure to fix.

The problem is that as this is an 8-bit map (images) I can't overlay the real track over this segment map. I first have to analyze where this corner cutting happens by checking replays, and then by driving the track myself.

Next I have to open the segment map in Photoshop as an 8-bit image and change the section where the issue is happening. This is often just a matter of a few pixels which need to be changed in a different segment color. Btw, the purple color indicates 'neutral terrain'!

Next I have to save the segment map, and compile the track using the modified segment map. I must then restart my development version of VRC as the change is only made on this level, and drive the car to the corner or corners where the issue has surfaced. I must drive that corner very slowly several times, each time closer to where the issue happens. I have a special top-view camera option for this.

I often have to repeat this process 10 to sometimes up to 20x before an issue is resolved, very time consuming. This can easily take 1 to 2 hours, just so you know.

If the corner cutting issue is resolved I must then publish the revised track to the Beta Test server, check again, and if all is OK publish it to the live server.

Image is the segment map of Fiorano. This is a relative simple map. You can probably imagine that testing and trouble-shooting becomes a lot more time consuming with double or triple the segments!

I rely on feedback from members to be notified of such issues but be patient, I am not always available for quick fixes!
