The first season of 2013 has come to a close and we’ve seen some very tight finishes, and some big surprises!
SHORT COURSE TRUCKS by TEKIN
The duels between 2012 VRC World Champion David Joor and Martin Wollanka continued throughout the season with Joor winning the season opener at Mikes 2 but Wollanka taking top honors in rounds 2, 3, 5 and 6 crowning him the Season 1 Series champion. Round 4 saw a surprise win by David Ronnefalk from Sweden at Silver Dollar Raceway. Marcin Malinski completes the Season 1 podium as a distant 3rd, just ahead of Backemeyer from the US and Sonnekus from Thailand.
In the Nations standing USA (Joor, Backemeyer, Redmin, Pahud and Hart) came out on top in SCT as to be expected, with France in 2nd and Austria in 3rd. The 6 events of this series saw a total participation of 726 racers, making it the most attended series in Season 1.

Martin Wollanka’s performance in electric touringcars was also outstanding but less dominant than in Short Course. 2 Wins and 2 second places did it for the Austrian, just enough to keep runner up Barnabas Toht from Hungary behind him. David Joor took up on-road racing as well in season 1 and did very well winning the very last round of the series at the SPL-2 track in Tokyo which secured him the last podium place in 3rd.
Austria (Wollanka, Haslinger,Graf, Pentz and Burger-Ringer), Germany and Hungary took the top-3 positions in the Nations standings in this class. 419 Racers participated in this 6 race series.
In 1:10 ISTC 13.5T Spec class Barnabas Toth won the first title in this class, with Brian Poliseno and Jason Hillcoat in 2nd and 3rd. This class saw some very close finishes and nobody was able to really dominate this class where set-up changes are not possible: it’s all up to the driver.
Germany (Vey, Knippenberg, Rosenhahn, Rosenhahn, Lehr), Austria and France filled the podium in the Nations standings. A total of 131 different racers competed in this series.
1:12 SPORTSCARS by SERPENT
This class was dominated by Jorg Knippenberg from Germany. Jorg won all 5 races he attended. 1:10 ISTC 13.5T Spec winner Barnebas Toht cam second and Atsushi Hasagawa from Japan finished 3rd in this closely contested championship.
With 4 racers in the top-10, (Hasagawa, Koyae, Takeshita and Takasuji) Japan secured victory over Germany and Hungary. In this 6 race series 401 different racers showed up at the start!
1:8 NITRO SPORTSCARS by SERPENT
This big surprise of the season was Martin Wollanka also winning this closely contested class. With 3 wins and one second place he just edged out the favorite to win this title, 2012 Race2theWorlds winner Kevin Pignotti from Italy. Victory in the last race for which there were extra points to be won just wasn’t enough to beat the fast Austrian. Antonello Parisi finished a strong 3rd, just ahead of newcomer Hiromu Fujji from Japan and Giorgio Mingotti from Italy.
Italy with 5 racers in the top-10 (Pignotti, Parisi, Mingotti, Poliseno and Aliprandi), comfortably won this class in front of Austria and Switzerland. A solid 279 racers participated in the 1:8 nitro series.

Paul Patto from Australia came out on top after 6 races, winning 2 and coming 2nd in another 2. This was enough to keep Barnebas Toht and Graham Raistrick (UK) behind him. Graham finished tied 3rd with Brian Poliseno from Italy, but the 2nd place in the last race of the season at Messina moved him up to the podium.
Australia (Patto, Death, Curless, Rich and Cheung) captured the title in the Nations standings, ahead of Germany and Italy. This class was attended by 344 racers!
With a total of 2300 racers spread over 5 classes Season 1 has been a big success, with Martin Wollanka as the star of the show taking 3 titles in 3 totally different classes, quite an achievement. During Season 1 the ABC final system was introduced. For Season 2 the so called ‘virtual opponents’ feature has been added making the racing even more intense! Let’s see who comes out on top…
