SCALE DISCUSSION 1:8 SPORTSCARS

17.09.2025   Category: Site news

I recently re-posted the video of the very first Euro's for 1:8 in Modena Italy, back in 1974. I also posted images from that video of Ronnie Ton's independent suspension car as a tribute to his contribution to model car racing, not only for his unique and innovative independent suspension chassis, but also for his eye for detail. Model car racing was not only about speed in those days but also about appearance. Aerodynamics played hardly a role in these early years of r/c racing.

When chassis, tires and engines got better aerodynamics became more and more important and eventually completely took over appearance and scale looks. Modern 1:8 scale cars have zero resemblance with anything that is being raced today in real life.

Our 3D developer has created a modern LMP body, these are the sportscars being raced today, and have scaled them to fit a current 1:8 chassis, the Serpent 190 chassis and true scale.

We would like to start a discussion about this subject and find out what you think of an 'almost' true scale LMP body fitted to a chassis with a proper trackwidth and wheelbase and whether this could become a new 1:8 scale electric car class for VRC Pro.

I believe VRC is deploying its manpower in the wrong place.
We have had a very low number of participants in the races for some time now. When there are more participants, it is because the event is taking place on a free track. Providing more tracks or classes free of charge is not an option.
Yes, it is summer in the northern hemisphere, but the number of participants per race was not much better during the last two winters.
I would prefer to see fewer races per week, and we should also consider whether it still makes sense to offer the three classes ‘Club’, “Sport” and ‘Pro’ or whether it would be better to have only one class.
Many who use VRC Pro have a real RC car background, and racing classes with many participants have always attracted more additional participants. It's just much more interesting to compete with many drivers than always with the same 10 people.
Rally was only popular for a short time, the same with the Stadium ‘Monster’ Trucks, and I think it will be the same with the GT3 Club Racer category next season.
Numerous XTR tracks (LT 1, MT1, ST1, etc.) have been released, all of which are ‘fantasy’ tracks that do not exist in real life, and when I look at the track statistics, they are not particularly popular, except when a race is taking place on them.
VRC stands for ‘Virtual RC’, so VRC should also try to stay as close to reality (real RC cars and tracks) as possible.
There are already plenty of other racing games of various kinds, and to be honest, the latest racing games on PC, Xbox or PlayStation are simply in a league of their own!
In VRC, we have enough races, enough classes, enough parts and tyres to change. Due to the well-known situation with the original VRC developers, further development in many areas is unfortunately not possible.
I don't know exactly how much effort is involved in creating new tracks, but I would have always liked it if VRC had offered the current world championship tracks from 1:8 on-road, 1:10 on-road and 1:8 off-road.
Whether new tracks will save the game is difficult to say, but new bodywork that does not exist in real RC racing will certainly be of little help.
Some may see this as missing the point, but a new body shape will not make the game more attractive and, if anything, will only bring in a few more users in the short term.

I am thinking 1:8 electric, we don't have such a class yet and the scale discussion is not really a 1:10 scale issue as the 200mm chassis and bodies are close to scale.

Using the Serpent 190 4WD chassis as a basis would also open up a Formula 1 class eventually.

Could this be done for 1/10th TC? I ask this because I've seen people running this in real life already.

I think it's a great idea and I'd love to give it a go myself.
