Report by J-P.Huhtala (VRC race reporter)
2016 Season 1 and round 5, Messina
At fifth round this electric 1:10 ISTC spec series travelled to Italy, Messina circuit. This track is on the island of Sicily in the south of Italy. The track hosted 2005 IFMAR World Championship for 1:8 scale sportcars, and it was wonned by racing legend Lamberto Collari. Lay-out of this track is guite simple but this makes it even more difficult to gain time and make a difference.
Earlier race, in Carpet 1 circuit was wonned by Hungarian talent Barnabas Toth. Finnish Viljami Kutvonen and Swedish Christian Holmström were giving a hard time to Toth but finally Hungarian was the strongest at there. After four rounds, serie is leaded by Indonesian Hijrah Saputra, Graham Raistrick from Britain is at second place, but only one point behind Saputra. German Benjamin Lehman is at third place, 19 points behind leader.
QUALIFYING
When qualifying ended, Steve and Maxime Favrelle from France were setting the pace to others. Steve was in first position and took the TQ place, with very tiny 0.4 seconds margin before Maxime. Swedish talent Holmström was in third place, allmost two seconds behind TQ. These three drivers at front were favourites to compete about the win, because man in fourth place, Ugo Calaprice from Italy, had over three seconds margin to winner. Fifth place was driven by Finnish J-P.Huhtala, he had allmost four seconds margin to TQ winner Favrelle.
RACE
When grid was arranged, it seemed that five guys had allready thought that they have losted this one. This totally colapsed the atmoshpere in here, but luckily we had these five gladiators to show us, how its done. From the tone, nothing miracles happend as these drivers started. Huhtala tryed something special with his lightning start, but this advantage was losted in second corner with his wide line. Steve Favrelle was leading, Maxime and Holmström were following. After few laps, Steve was still at lead, and what was nice to see, Holmströn had come to this final with very aggressive style. He was pressuring Maxime at second place really hard and passed this one, at third lap.
Steve Favrelle showed his pace at qualifying, and also at race he was unbeatable.
Next laps didnt gave us any changes in order and Steve at the lead, had very stable half second margin ahead of Holmström. So, Steve was leading, Holmström was in battle with Maxime about second place, Huhtala was in fourth place but Lehman was pressuring him very close range. Everybody knewed before final, this had to be driven ”all or nothing” style, as the differences were so little.
Holmström(white) came to final with very strong performance, but finally he had to surrender to Maxime Favrelle.
And we witnessed very close battle, as Holmström and Maxime Favrelle were in battle. and also we witnessed, when differences are tiny, one tiny wrong line and that was it. Holmström who had passed Maxime and runned at second place from lap two, came to corner eight at lap 12 and got little too wide access to mainstraight. His lap was only 0.3 seconds slower than Maxime`s and this dropped him to third place. Rest of the final anything special didnt happend. Steve Favrelle had remarkable pace, and he got well deserved victory from here with 0.4 seconds margin before Maxime. Maxime defended his place very nicely, even Holmström was at second place most of the time, Maxime didnt gave up and got his second place back. Holmström drove to third place, finally his gap to Maxime was half seconds. Fourth place went to Huhtala and fifth place to Lehmann. These two at back had good fight of the fourth, differences were very close all the time. Lehmann in fifth position gave Huhtala really hard pressure, as the finishline difference between these two was only half second.
Lehmann(orange) gave good pressure to Huhtala.
In SPORT level we had also huge battle, but this one was about winning the race. Lee Passehl from USA and Timo Schad from Germany gave us a good entertainment. From the start, Schad was leading this group, at lap two Passehl passed Schad and got the lead. From this point, differences between these two were close and Lee in front didnt surrender and drove very consistent and fast final. At finishline gap was only 0.9 seconds, Passehl first and Schad second.
Four seconds behind these two, third who crossed the finishline was Swedish Markus Andreasson. Markus had also big battle against German Sean Krause. Krause was in third place all the way up to 14th lap when Andreasson passed him. Finally Andreasson wonned this battle of third, with 0.3 margin.
In CLUB level, Nuno Lourenco had pretty easy job to get this one. He drove consistent and safe run, came to finishline five seconds before Alexander Dunkl. Instead this Austrian Dunkl had big fight against Netherlands Peter Haaima. They switched the places all final but at finishline, Dunkl was stronger with half second margin to Haaima.
